For many of us, New Year’s Eve may be bittersweet – sweet in the enjoyment of New Year’s celebrations with friends or loved ones, yet bitter when we think about resolutions we made a year ago that we did not keep.
I believe the mistake we make is thinking New Year’s Eve is a time for resolutions – making resolutions for the following year is to draw our mind to only focus on our ‘shortcomings’ for the past year rather than our achievements.
Rather, New Year’s Eve should be a time for reflection – reflecting on our accomplishments, on the new connections we have made, on how we have developed spiritually, personally or professionally.
Starting a new year hoping to make some big changes, yet being in a deflated mindset as we cry over what we failed to do that must be ‘rescheduled’ yet again, is counterintuitive.
Instead, beginning the year with a spirit of gratitude for what we have been blessed with and what we have achieved, is to set ourselves up for success, because this time, we are launching into a new year from a ‘capable’ and ‘inspired’ place.
Tony Robbins once said, “The quality of one’s life is directly related to the quality of questions you ask yourself.”
Therefore, my challenge to you this New Year’s Eve is to reflect on your ‘gains’ rather than your ‘losses’ and ask yourself these three questions:
- What are my accomplishments for 2016?
- What new personal or professional connections did I make in 2016?
- How have I developed spiritually, personally or professionally in 2016?
