Do you have a story you want to share with the world? Have you tried to go down the route of traditional publishing but only met with rejection after rejection?
With the advent of the internet and the development of online tools and services, releasing your book is no longer an impossible dream. But there are some truths in the world of self-publishing that you must also know.
In this 2.5 hour online workshop, Raihanaty A Jalil will walk you through the step-by-step process to produce a high-quality book (from novels to children’s books) in both digital and physical form, which people won’t believe is self-published (because let’s be honest; self publishing has received some negative press). Moreover, she will give you an honest account about the ups and downs of choosing this path so you can make an informed decision about how best to release your baby into the world.
BONUS: All participants will receive an email of the slides and resources covered in the workshop plus the workshop recording to give them a head start into the world of self-publishing!
Raihanaty A Jalil is a self-published author of novelette, “Love, Faith and Numbers: a Muslim Short Story Collection” and co-founder of KMB Press where she co-authored a Muslim children’s book, “Shoo Shaytan From Your Dreams!”. In addition, she has been an advisor and coach to Dr Aminah Mah in the release of her non-fiction work, “Watering the Roots: A 1-2-3 Parent Wellbeing Guide (a Muslim Perspective)”. Raihanaty has read her work during Perth Festival Writers Week, at The Wheeler Centre for the Digital Writers’ Festival and has sat on the board for Centre for Stories.

For prospective authors looking to self-publish their books, or writers still thinking about the possibilities between traditional and self-publishing, they should look no further than Raihanaty A Jalil’s comprehensive workshop, How to Self-Publish A Book in Australia (From novel’s to Children’s books.) Raihanaty’s workshop was incredibly informative, and she provides an extensive overview of the steps required to help you understand how to approach it as a possible avenue. As self publishing is still widely untapped in Australia, I came in knowing very little about the details of what it might entail. Raihanaty goes through the basics from first drafting your manuscript and how to best utilise editing while finding the right editor to help you polish and sharpen your work, an undoubtedly important step when crafting your writing.
Raihanaty also provides extensive detail on the applications and programs you can publish your book through, such as Amazon, Ingram Spark and the upfront costs required for them. She combines her knowledge with her own personal experiences to help you make an informed decision on whether self-publishing is the right path for you.
Throughout the workshop, Raihanaty is warm, attentive and engaging, always making sure that I understood what she was covering and if I had any questions about the process. She dives into the nuances that each platform offers, such as the pros and cons that may come up if deciding to print physical copies, E-Books, and audiobooks.
Besides publishing, she also shares ways you can effectively manage your finances, and ways you can gain revenue from your writing, instead of just the How-tos. Raihanaty breaks down the ways authors can market their work to the broader public, such as the method and proper etiquette in approaching bookstores and gaining the attention of writing festivals. These are all fantastic and valuable ways to share your work. At the conclusion of the workshop, Raihanaty also shares a wealth of resources to help you get started and leaves you feeling equipped.
I would highly recommend her workshop to anyone thinking about self-publishing as she holds a vast amount of knowledge on this topic, enriched with her own personal experiences as a successful, self-published Author. I came in knowing very little about self-publishing, but Raihanaty succinctly goes over each aspect and left me feeling more confident about understanding self-publishing and the possibilities it offers.
